Mission Australia’s Home Tutor Scheme provides an individualized and personalized tutorial service to newly arrived adult migrants, 18 and over, to help them learn the basics of the English language.
The service is provided by trained volunteers on a one to one basis, generally in the client’s home. Home Tutor clients must be eligible for the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP).
The Home Tutor Scheme recruits and trains volunteer with a free training course to prepare them for their role.
In completion of the course, tutors are matched with students by gender and locality, and supported with advice and resources. Home Tutor also manages the Enhancement Program which provides support to community groups such as libraries, schools, ethnic associations and churches to set up and run English language classes for migrants no longer eligible for the Home Tutor Scheme.
Mission Australia delivers the Home Tutor Scheme and educational counselling as part of The Navitas English AMEP Consortium - a partnership of organisations dedicated to assisting migrants and refugees to settle into the community.
The Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) is funded by the Australian Government Department of Education and Training.
